Buying a car in Ghana — why DriveGH is different

Ghana's used car market is large, fragmented and — if you are not careful — full of risk. Cars with clocked odometers, undisclosed accident histories, missing DVLA documentation, imported vehicles with outstanding clearance fees, and sellers who disappear after payment are real problems Ghanaian buyers face every year. DriveGH was built to be different.

Every car DriveGH sells has been in our own rental fleet or sourced directly through our network. We know the mechanical history because we have driven these cars. We handle all DVLA paperwork, insurance transfer and registration. We offer financing through partner banks. And we welcome — actively encourage — pre-purchase inspection by your own mechanic before you commit a cedi.

What makes a good used car purchase in Ghana?

The most important factors when buying a used car in Ghana are: verified mileage (bring a trusted mechanic or use an OBD scanner), full DVLA documentation in the seller's name with no outstanding duties, mechanical inspection by a specialist for your specific make, service history evidence where available, and a seller who is willing to negotiate transparently and allow independent inspection.

DriveGH meets all these standards. We are transparent about our vehicles — the photos on each listing are real photos of the actual car, not stock images. The mileage shown is verified from the actual odometer reading at time of photography. And we will never pressure you to buy before you are ready.

Car financing in Ghana — how it works

DriveGH works with Ghanaian partner banks to offer auto financing on all vehicles in our inventory. The process: you identify the car you want, WhatsApp us, we connect you with our financing contact, you complete the bank's standard income verification process, and if approved, you drive away with a repayment schedule that works for your budget. Typical terms range from 12 to 36 months. WhatsApp us to start the conversation.

The used car market in Ghana — what buyers need to know

Ghana's used car market is one of West Africa's most active, processing thousands of imports monthly through Tema Port. The majority of vehicles arrive from the United States, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom. American imports dominate the SUV and saloon categories, while Japanese vehicles — particularly Toyota Landcruiser, RAV4 and Honda variants — command strong demand and premium pricing.

The challenge for Ghanaian buyers is verification. Unlike the UK or USA where CARFAX and similar services provide accident history, Ghana has no centralised vehicle history database. This makes physical inspection and seller transparency critical. Flood-damaged vehicles from US hurricane seasons, clocked odometers and undisclosed accident repairs are documented issues in Ghana's import market.

Ghanaian registered vs imported vehicles

A Ghanaian registered vehicle has already cleared Tema Port and paid all import duties. The DVLA transfer is straightforward and the buyer avoids the import process entirely. DriveGH's Toyota RAV4 2021 and Hyundai Tucson Sport 2017 are both Ghanaian registered — you buy and drive without any additional import costs or delays.

Importing directly from auction in the USA or Japan can offer lower prices but involves shipping costs, Tema Port clearing fees, DVLA import duties and a 4–8 week wait. For buyers who want a specific model and have patience, importing can be cost-effective. For buyers who want to drive immediately with verified documentation, a Ghanaian registered vehicle from DriveGH is the simpler path.
